SCA Recycling praised in UK parliament for their Christmas recycling efforts
SCA Recycling met with the Woodland Trust and the other agents involved in the Christmas card recycling scheme, to celebrate another successful year of Christmas card recovery. SCA Recycling, in part, provided the infrastructure to recover and reprocess, post consumer Christmas cards collected from a number of national retailers.
The Woodland Trust is the leading woodland conservation charity. It has 300,000 members and supporters and runs the scheme for two principle reasons. They believe in the environmental benefits of recycling and they also receive recycling credits for the tonnage that they are responsible for diverting from Landfill, which in turn enables the Woodland Trust to buy and plant more trees.
As a thank you to SCA Recycling the Woodland Trust has also dedicated a quarter of an acre of "tranquil Woodland", to us. This area of woodland is situated near Gravesend in Kent. Below is the full press release from Woodland Trust, which makes for interesting reading.
"The SCA Recycling team has been praised for helping to collect 73.6 million Christmas cards at the results event held in the Houses of Parliament."
Paddy Tipping MP announced the results of the 2008 Christmas Card Recycling Scheme in the Palace of Westminster’s Jubilee suite, on Thursday.
The scheme, which is run by the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, The Woodland Trust and Recycle Now, estimates the collected cards will enable 17,000 trees to be planted.
Your help also diverted 1,461 tonnes of card being dumped on landfill and the equivalent of 1,930 tonnes of C02 being released into the atmosphere, according to WRAP.
Sue Holden, Chief Executive of the Woodland Trust, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to SCA Recycling. I know an enormous amount of work goes into collecting and sorting the cards in stores, as well as to the overall organisation of the scheme.
"I feel from looking at the results you can all give yourselves a well deserved pat on the back, as your efforts will help us plant thousands and thousands of trees. These trees will eventually grow into majestic woodland which will become a place people of all ages can enjoy.
The UK is the least wooded country in Europe with only 12% woodland compared to an average of 44% on the continent. With your help this year we are one step closer to changing this, so again thank you."
Money to plant the trees was raised through recycling credits which are given out by local authorities in return for the card.
This year the recycling scheme, which is in its 11th year, received celebrity support from Joanna Lumley, Anna Ryder Richardson, Emmerdale’s Emily Symons and Dale Winton, to name just a few.
It was also featured on prime time TV, scores of radio stations, magazines and most national and local newspapers.
