A Brief History of SCA Recycling London Branch
Opened in 1969 after moving from a much smaller site in nearby Greenwich the London site employed some 250 people, production ran at around 600 tonnes a week, with as many as 8 balers operating at any one time. The balers were installed in two purpose built buildings under the direction and Management of James C Maybank, OBE the founder of the original J & J Maybank Waste Paper business.
In 1988 the site was redeveloped with the demolition of both of the existing production buildings and most of the original office accommodation. One large open plan single production building was erected which housed two balers, one hogger and a simple sorting platform. Production ran at around 900 tonnes a week, with another 300 tonnes being collected from customers and delivered directly into mills. The General Manager at that time was Ken Stevens who was quoted as saying "If volumes reach 1,500 tonnes a week I don’t want to be in charge!"
Today the site employs a workforce of 45 and processes over 2,000 tonnes a week through a two shift system. The current Branch Manager, Chris Hampson, recently said "now that we have the capacity to do more volume we are excited by this opportunity, so bring on the volume Peter!"
