SCA expansion into a wider range of dry recyclables
SCA Recycling, one of the UK’s market leaders in paper recovery, has for the first time announced its intention to move into a wider range of dry recyclables.
The planned development of a Materials Recovery Facility in the Southampton area will see the company expand its interests into the recovery of plastics, metal cans and glass from industrial and commercial sectors and also from local authority sources.
SCA Recycling is to build on its experience and expertise in the paper recycling market to provide additional materials recovery services. This investment will move the company into new, more dynamic markets, which are being driven by legislative changes and environmental factors. It will also allow for the company to meet the challenges of the market through the development of a modern facility of the highest environmental and technical standards.
The new plant is scheduled for completion in summer 2009 and will occupy a 6.7-acre site and create up to 80 new jobs with a capacity to process 200,000 tonnes per annum of paper and dry recyclables. Utilising best available technology, the new facility will help to achieve the goal recently identified by WRAP, for Materials Recovery Facilities to improve the quality of recyclate produced in the UK.
Partnerships are expected with commercial and industrial sources, municipal stakeholders as well as local and national waste management companies.
Ken Stevens of SCA Recycling said, “This is a significant strategic move by SCA. It will allow us to develop quality partnerships to ensure our new and existing customers can make the best of a new era of developing resources from waste. This will enhance the ability of SCA to compete successfully where customers place high demands on sustainability. Recycling has become an essential part of everyday life and the UK desperately needs merchant facilities to meet the growing requirement for cost effective, sustainable alternatives to landfill”.
